Some ensembles need defined instrumentation and advanced skills. That does not mean the entire statewide system should begin with an audition. ANCHOR can separate access to music from placement into a particular high-demand role.
Use the least stressful method that answers the real musical question
What are we actually trying to find out?
Supported placement
Play familiar material, use a recording/chart, try several parts, or work with an instructor to identify a useful section.
Portfolio
Producer, songwriter, engineer, composer or studio musician may show existing work instead of performing live on demand.
Prepared audition
Appropriate when a defined advanced ensemble genuinely needs to assess specific technique, range, reading or repertoire.
Trial rehearsal
Sometimes ensemble fit, cue-following and listening are better observed inside the actual musical context than alone behind a screen.
Alternative demonstration
If a conventional audition format measures panic or communication burden more than the required skill, change the format while preserving the skill standard.
Rigor means measuring the musical requirement accurately.
